How To Buy Grapes Through This Website

Thanks for taking a look at my website, the home of excellent wine grapes.

I’m getting a lot of new people this year that have never purchased grapes from me through this website.  So, here’s how it works.

First, sign up for email wine grape availability updates in the box above.

Determine how much wine you want to make and how many pounds of grapes you will need.

Purchase the equipment you will need to pick and haul your grapes or “must”.  Bring with you to the “pick” what you will need.

Read the “How To Pick Grapes” page on this website for more information.

Note:  From time to time I run Craigslist ads and send out emails advertising used wine making equipment for sale.  I Do Not sell equipment at a “pick” when we are picking grapes to make wine.  It is up to you to bring the equipment you will need to a “pick” so that you can pick and haul your grapes home with you to make your wine.

I represent about 20 vineyards.  When grapes are ripe and ready to pick I send out an email identifying the grapes that are ready to pick including the price per pound, or price per ton.

Some of my clients are small wineries who buy grapes by the ton.

Most of my clients (around 900 folks)  are home wine makers who want a few hundred pounds of grapes.

When I send out an email referencing “Small Wineries” and “tons of grapes” that email is NOT for home wine makers.  It is for Small Wineries who want tons of grapes.

When I announce a “pick” for home wine makers, that is for you folks that want to buy grapes by the pound, and want to pick them yourself.

I only sell grapes in the east bay, eastern Contra Costa County.  Not in Napa, Sonoma, Livermore, Lodi or other grape growing reigns.

I tell you the “pick” date, time and place to meet.  You show up for the “pick” (on time at the correct date and place) and I take you to the grapes.

We will meet in one of two places.  Either in Oakley or Brentwood, California, USA (in Eastern Contra Costa County).

See the “Directions” page for detailed info on these meeting places.

You pick the grapes you want, pay (in cash) for the grapes and go make your wine. (“You Pick” means you pick the grapes off the vine. The grapes are not harvested for you.)

A crusher/destemmer will be available for your use for a small fee.

Crusher/Destemmer

I do not allow folks to show up at vineyards and pick grapes unattended.  I am responsible to the vineyard owner for the folks I bring to pick grapes.

Please be on time.  You ARE NOT welcome to show up late at the vineyard just because you know where we will be picking that day.

As many as 50 or more people may show up for the same pick. So, please, be on time and be prepared.

See the “More Info” page for more information about how to pick and purchase small amounts of wine grapes (“small amounts” means under a ton).

Attention White Wine grape buyers.  If you set it up in advance with me, I will make sure that both my crusher/destemmer and wine bucket press are available for your use (for a small fee) when you pick white wine grapes at a “pick”.

UPDATE and short history of grape picking

Get ready for the 2024 season

We had a great time in 2011 and got some GREAT GRAPES! Now we do know if the great Oakley Old Vine grapes will be available in 2012 and the news is not good for home winemakers.

Due to the economy many wineries have been cutting back on their production the last couple years and reducing inventory.  They can only do that so long and stay in business.

In 2012 they were contracting for grapes, which means fewer vineyards available for home winemakers and small production wineries.

Prices are up, availability (for us) is down.  That’s good for the farmers, not so good for us.

Exactly how much access we will have to the “Old Vine” grapes (and all grapes, for that matter in 2012) will only be known when harvest starts, but it will be a lot more limited than in the past two years.

Year 2013  Much the same as 2012.  Little availability for the home wine maker and higher prices.

For Year 2014 it looks a lot better for winegrape availability for home wine makers and small wineries.  We look to have grapes available from Oakley, Brentwood, Knightsen and from Martinez.

Year 2015 was good for winegrape access.

Year 2016 was a great year for winegrape access.

Year 2017 was an excellent year for winegrapes.

Year 2018 was an excellent year for winegrapes.

Year 2019 was an excellent year for winegrapes.

Year 2020 started early and ended early.

Year 2021 started early and ended early like 2020.

Year 2022 the grapes were wonderful… as usual!

Year 2023 started late and ended early.

Watch your email and this website for details as the harvest for 2024 approaches.

What winegrapes are available? What varietals, quantity and price per pound of winegrapes will be available?  See the “Winegrape Availability” page and watch for email updates.

FYI:  Many of the winegrapes from Oakley and Brentwood are purchased by wineries from Napa, Sonoma and SLO to produce world class boutique wines.

One more comment.  There’s a Jackass in the wine grape business in the Livermore/Pleasanton area who badmouth’s Easters Contra Costa as having substandard grapes.  That’s pure BS.  Wineries like Hannah Nicole, Cline, Rosenblum, Rock Wall, Nunn, Bloomfield and many others get all or most of their grapes from this area.  I’ve never heard of a grape grower in one area putting down another grape growing region just to try to sell his grapes.  I don’t know how good his grapes are, but I would never do business with lying clown.
